Does Barack Benefit from his Femininity?

Much has been written about Barack Obama's racial background. The son of a Kenyan immigrant and a white Kansas native, he identifies himself as black. Many do not consider him African American because he has no personal connection to slavery. Obama himself makes refernce to his unique ethnic background. Some see this as a political advantage, allowing him to identify with diverse groups in a way that others cannot.

With apologies to Muhammad Ali, Obama is also pretty. Smooth skinned with a thin body and delicate features, he is somewhat feminine. Perhaps this helps him to connect with both genders in a similar way. Perhaps feminists would be less forgiving of an overtly masculine man that directed phrases like "Annie Oakley" or "claws come out" or "sweetie".

Granted, it's a pretty subliminal thing. But on some level his occasional expressions of sexism could be dulled by a feeling he is, in a passing way, one of the ladies.

This diary is unecessarily provocative, (none / 0)

more than a bit unfair, and certainly an effort at jeering.

I will comment on the general theme, though.  I don't see Obama as at all feminine.  I don't see him as especially masculine, either.  I also can't classify him as androgenous because I think that would imply that he has noticeable features of both sexes.  Since he doesn't seem to have strong features of either, I'll refer to him as undifferentiated.

Not physical in her case (none / 0)

Earlier in the primary, she played up the feminine side more - the coy remarks during debates, the occasional mock girliness, the wistful tears

Later in the primary, she played up a more of a one-of-the-boys image.  Downing the shots, shrugging off the press bashing on O'Reilly as all part of the territory, etc.

Hey (2.00 / 14)

Much has been written about Michael Begala's trollish background. The son of a bridge troll and a mountain goat, he identifies himself as a troll. Many do not consider him a troll because he speaks againt political candidates they don't want to see elected. Michael himself makes refernce to his unwavering support of MyDD. Some see this as a pathetic ploy, allowing him to potentially get on the rec list without having truly earned it.

With apologies to Billy Goat Gruff, Michael is also a goat fornicator. Proudly horned and cloven-hoofed, he is definitely goaty. Perhaps this helps him to connect with both trolls and goats in a similar way. Perhaps goat enthusiasts would be less forgiving of an overtly trollish humanoid that directed phrases like "can eater" or "mountain-ranging" or "Baphomet-like."

Granted, it's a pretty horrifying thing. But on some level his occasional expressions of trollism could be dulled by a feeling he is, in a passing way, one of the goats.

Hey. I'm crushing on Obama. I'm neither gay nor an Obama supporter at this point in time. But the use of the tactic of "feminizing" men to score political points is really appealing to the most seriously sexually insecure. It's both homophobic and misogynistic, as is "masculinizing" women. The definitions of masculine and feminine are arbitrarily defined by a culture, and tend to linger perniciously for hundreds of years.

  • You can top the Rec list with about 12 recommends.  That's why the HillaryIs44 cell has been able to own it for months.  It's trivial if you coordinate, and Jerome decides your serial recommendations are on diaries he likes.
  • Libelous, unfounded diaries are never taken down.  Bob Johnson's factual pro-Obama ones often were.
  • Diaries written by Republicans often make the Rec list.
  • Diaries recommending abandonment of the Democratic Party are recommended.

I could go on, but it's too sad.  This was a first-tier blog once; now it's crap through and through, and that has nothing to do with the Clinton advocacy.  It's structural, and terminal.

Oct 25, 1992, Page 9A, St. Paul Pioneer Press (MN)

While President Bush waited in a holding room offstage, one of his fishing buddies warmed up a large crowd at a rally Saturday by calling Gov. Bill Clinton a ``sissy'' whose rear end ``kind of swishes'' when he walks. Champion fisherman Ray Scott, speaking after three Republicans had referred to Clinton as a ``draft dodger,'' also told an off-color joke suggesting that the Democrat is less of a man than Bush.

March 2, 2007, Think Progress

Speaking today at the Conservative Political Action Conference, right-wing pundit Ann Coulter said: "I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word `faggot,' so I -- so kind of an impasse, can't really talk about Edwards." Audience members said "ohhh" and then cheered.
